Gas Wall Heater Repairs in Melbourne

When a gas wall heater or wall furnace stops working, a licensed gasfitter is the only person who can safely repair it. BM Heating & Cooling repairs gas wall and space heaters across Melbourne, from our base in the northern suburbs, and every repair includes a carbon monoxide safety check.

We repair all the major brands, whether you bought the heater or inherited it with the house, including Rinnai, Vulcan, Regency, Escea, Braemar and Pyrox. From a pilot that will not stay lit to a failed fan or gas valve, we get your heater running safely again.

We repair gas wall heaters throughout Reservoir, Preston, Bundoora, Thomastown, Epping, Coburg, Brunswick, Heidelberg, Northcote and right across the Melbourne metro area.

The Gas Wall Heater Faults We Fix

These are the faults we see most on gas wall and space heaters.

Pilot will not stay lit: the most common fault on older wall furnaces, almost always a faulty thermocouple. The pilot lights, then drops out when you release the knob.

Will not ignite: a failed igniter or spark electrode, a faulty ignition control board, or an interrupted gas supply.

Weak heat or fan not working: a dirty burner, low gas pressure or a blocked filter, or a failed fan motor or control board that stops warm air being pushed into the room.

Yellow flame, soot or shutdowns: a yellow or lazy flame and soot or staining above the unit point to incomplete combustion and a carbon monoxide risk. A heater that starts then shuts off is often a flame sensor or overheating fault.

Carbon Monoxide Safety With Every Repair

Many older wall furnaces in Melbourne homes are open-flued, which Energy Safe Victoria flags as the highest carbon monoxide risk category, so safety is central to every repair.

Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless. Open-flued heaters can spill it back into the room if the flue or seals degrade, or when exhaust fans and rangehoods create negative pressure. The only reliable check is a carbon monoxide spillage and negative-pressure test by a licensed gasfitter.

Energy Safe Victoria recommends every gas heater is serviced at least once every two years with a carbon monoxide check. We carry out that test with every repair, and we will always tell you if a unit is no longer safe to run.

Older open-flued Vulcan and Pyrox wall furnaces are the classic units to watch. Modern Regency and Escea gas fires have newer, often sealed combustion, but still need a carbon monoxide check at every service.

Why Choose BM Heating & Cooling

Licensed Gasfitters

Every gas repair is done by a licensed Type A gasfitter, the only person legally allowed to work on gas heaters in Victoria.

Carbon Monoxide Tested

We carry out a carbon monoxide spillage test with every repair, which matters most on older open-flued wall furnaces.

Honest Repair or Replace

We assess legacy units honestly, and when parts are obsolete or a unit fails a spillage test, we tell you plainly that replacement is safer.

Repair or Replace, and the Brands We Fix

Repair makes sense when the fault is a single serviceable part like a thermocouple, igniter, fan motor or thermostat, the unit is sound and passes its carbon monoxide test, and parts are available.

Replacement is the right call when the heat exchanger is cracked, the unit repeatedly fails a spillage test, or parts are obsolete, which is common on older Vulcan and Pyrox wall furnaces. A cracked heat exchanger or a unit that cannot pass spillage testing should be taken out of service, not patched.

We repair Rinnai, Vulcan, Regency, Escea, Braemar and Pyrox, along with other brands, regardless of who installed the unit. Rinnai is well supported with readily available parts, while some legacy models are better replaced, and we will give you honest advice either way.

Gas Wall Heater Repairs FAQs

Usually a faulty thermocouple, the safety sensor that keeps the gas valve open. When it fails the pilot lights but drops out on release. A licensed gasfitter replaces it, and it is a common, affordable repair.

The burner may be heating but a failed fan motor, thermal switch or control board is stopping airflow, or a dirty filter is causing an overheat cut-out. A gasfitter can diagnose it.

Yes. A yellow or lazy flame signals incomplete combustion and possible carbon monoxide, usually from a dirty burner. Stop using the heater and book a repair and CO test.

At least every two years per Energy Safe Victoria, and many manufacturers say annually before winter. Open-flued wall furnaces should always include a carbon monoxide spillage test.

Older open-flued units can spill carbon monoxide if the flue or seals degrade. They are not automatically unsafe, but they must be CO tested regularly, and if parts are obsolete or it fails a spillage test, replace it.

No. In Victoria, gas appliance work is legally restricted to licensed gasfitters. DIY is illegal, voids insurance and risks a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Repair if it is a single part, the unit is sound and parts are available. Replace if the heat exchanger is cracked, parts are discontinued, or it repeatedly fails carbon monoxide testing.

Yes. We repair all major brands including Rinnai, Vulcan, Braemar, Pyrox, Regency and Escea, regardless of who installed the unit.
